NBA news: Dirk Nowitzki injures knee; Shaq fined for criticizing referees; Chinese team cuts Steve Francis

Dirk Nowitzki injures knee

The Dallas Mavericks, like seemingly half the teams in the NBA, are on fire. They’ve won 17 of their last 18 games. But their latest win last night was costly. Dirk Nowitzki left in the second quarter with what is being called a sore knee. He’ll have a precautionary MRI today but the early whispers are that the injury isn’t too serious.

Shaquille O’Neal’s pocket is $35,000 lighter after the NBA fined him for publicly criticizing the league’s officiating. After Boston’s loss to Orlando on Christmas Day, in which he fouled out after crashing to the ground with Dwight Howard, Shaq said: I just wonder why I’ve never gotten that call in 20 years. Don’t pick and choose when you’re going to make the call…That’s what happens when you’ve got control freaks.”

Steve Francis has fallen a long way from the “Stevie Franchise” days. The former NBA All-Star starter now can’t even make a Chinese team. The Beijing Ducks have released the out-of-shape Francis, who played 14 minutes and scored two points over 13 days with the team.

NFL: Redskins defensive tackle Joseph arrested for DUI

Way to go, NFL. It seems that we can always count on one of your players to step up and get arrested during a slow news patch. The latest guy to fall on the grenade: Redskins defensive lineman Joe Joseph, He was arrested at roughly 3:00 a.m. Monday night after a single-car accident. He had made his NFL debut not even 24 hours earlier as a reserve against Jacksonville.

MLB news: Brewers sign Takashi Saito

The Milwaukee Brewers continue to overhaul their pitching staff. After bolstering their starting rotation with Zack Greinke and Shaun Marcum, they’ve added Takashi Saito to their bullpen. He’ll act as a late-inning bridge to closer John Axford. The 40-year-old Saito has a sparkling 2.19 career ERA in the big leagues.

NCAA football news: Florida without four starters in Outback Bowl

Florida hopes to end Urban Meyer’s tenure on a high note but the task is becoming more challenging by the day. The Gators will be without at least four starters in the Outback Bowl against Penn State on New Year’s Day.

Cornerback Janoris Jenkins, right tackle Maurice Hurt and defensive tackles Lawrence Marsh and Terron Sanders will all miss the game due to injury. The biggest loss is arguably Jenkins, who has started 36 of 39 games during his time with Florida and picked off eight passes.
